The Sketchbook Project is a traveling show of over 2,000 moleskin art sketchbooks. The project is sponsored by The art House Co-op of Atlanta, GA. I felt this was a good opportunity to exhibit photos I shot of artists in their studio. My photographic essay "Artist in their Studio" started in 1973. I began taking photographs of artists at Cal Arts, Valencia, CA where I was finishing up a Bachelor's degree. This project was expanded after graduating in '73. Through the help of Peter Plagens, I was able to contact prominent artists in the L.A. scene. These photos have never been published until now. The project continued when I later moved to New York, Conneticut and finally Massachusetts.
This is the cover of the notebook featuring Gloria Kisch, 1974, in her studio with her sculpture.
Peter Plagens, 1974, at home in Los Angeles, CA, with his painting in the background.
Emerson Wolffer, 1974 at his home in Pasadena, CA.
Claire Falkenstein, 1974, in her sculpture studio.
Alfred M. Licea at his drawing board in NYC.
The Sketchbook Project is coming to Boston tonight at the Laconia Gallery on Harrison St., Boston, 5:30-8:00. The Art House Co-op that is based in Atlanta is sponsoring this 9 city tour of over 2,000 sketchbooks from artists all over the US. The following are samples from my book, "Artists I Know or Knew".
